Interpretation – Conflicting Instructions
The Master realizes that there will sometimes be circumstances where the House Boy is unable to complete a chore or duty through no fault of his own, or the boy must decide between two conflicting responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the House Boy to prioritize his obligations and use good judgment in deciding how to proceed. These rules have been written to assist the boy in making good decisions, so the boy needs to read and learn these rules completely. Direct disobedience or ignorance of any rule is punishable unless that rule is subject to an exception for a higher rule (See ‘Paramount Rule’) or a verbal order by Master. In cases of discipline, the Master will always explain where the boy used poor judgment or misunderstood a rule if the boy so asks. House Boys who repeatedly make poor decisions or skirt the rules are subject to escalated punishment. Duties assigned must be completed in the assigned time frame, unless an extension or exception is asked for and granted.
