Water is essential for life, so the House Boy is always permitted to access water, provided he is naked when actually drinking it. This is a 24/7/365 rule in nearly all situations and circumstances. At home, a Naked House Boy may always access drinking water without asking, though he can not use this rule as an excuse to delay punishment or to avoid a duty or chore for longer than it takes to take a drink of water. When traveling with the Master away from home, the boy is also allowed to access drinking fountains and other water sources provided he is completely naked while doing so.

If the boy is traveling with the Master away from home and the boy is clothed, he must ask the Master before using any drinking fountain. If the request is denied, the boy will still have the opportunity to get water when he and the Master arrive at their destination – or the boy may choose to voluntarily strip and access the fountain without permission. Nothing in this rule requires any boy to strip where nudity is not legal or traditional – he can always choose to wait until later to hydrate.

The protocol calls for the boy to be completely naked when exercising the option to access a drinking fountain without permission, though footwear and hats are permitted. Since the boy is never required to use this rule as a way to get water for drinking, it is considered a voluntary act by the boy if he strips to access water and the Master is neither liable nor responsible for the choice of the boy to undress. The boy will have the right to keep a small water bottle in any vehicle for travel.
