It is the responsibility of the House Boy to properly store, stock, use and replace garbage and shopping bags. This includes stocking and replacement of liners in waste paper baskets around the home, use of heavy-duty garbage bags for the trash and recycling bins which are scheduled for regular pickup, and use of shopper-provided bags when making grocery and other purchases on all weekly and other assigned shopping trips.

California no longer allows grocery and convenience stores to provide free plastic bags, so the Master will stock a supply of reusable plastic or canvas bags with environmentally-friendly messages like “Use Me Again and Again” or “I Use This Bag Because My Master Cares About The Environment”.

Bags are now only available at retailers for a fee of ten cents each, and it shall be a Level One Violation for each bag that the boy needs to purchase because he has forgotten to bring bags from home. A second consecutive violation on a subsequent day will be punished at Level Two, and each additional consecutive violation at Level Three for Insubordination. The boy is not expected to reimburse the cost of bags purchased.

In the event a retailer or customer asks the House Boy about the message on any bag which he has brought from home, the boy is required to answer honestly that “My Master supplies the bags for me when I do his shopping.” In the event that the supply of bags at home has run out, the boy is authorized to purchase bags at the retailer with no discipline to be assessed and report the purchase to the Master so that new custom bags may be ordered.

The Master welcomes suggestions from house guests and others of environmentally-friendly messages to be imprinted on custom plastic and canvas shopping bags. The House Boy has no right to refuse to carry or use any bag which has been approved by the Master. Any attempt to conceal or cover up the message on any bag will be punished as a Level Three Insubordination.
