Duties and Chores – Bicycle Maintenance
The Master provides the House Boy with a bicycle for exercise and short errands during times when using an automobile is inefficient or otherwise undesirable. It is the responsibility of the boy to conduct basic preventive maintenance including keeping the chain oiled, tires filled with air, etc. The boy is also responsible for removing and installing easy-to-replace parts when replacements are needed and keeping the bicycle clean and presentable at all times. When a trip to the Bike Shop is necessary, it is traditional for the Master’s House Boy on sunny days to wear only a single lightweight item of clothing – like nylon shorts or a speedo or compression shorts – though footwear and sunglasses are optional.
The Master provides garaged storage and a maintenance area in the backyard where the boy can work on his bicycle. Except when it is unsafe to do so, the boy will conduct all cleaning and maintenance at home while naked, regardless of who may be present and could observe. Footwear is optional. The boy is subject to inspection or cleaning during and after all bicycle maintenance, including road testing.
Master may assign the House Boy to wash, repair, diagnose, or road test any bicycle, including those owned by the Master or guests, subject to safety guidelines and the individual ability of the House Boy. The Master hosts one “Arrive By Bike” event every summer to encourage guests to save on gas, and the House Boy acts as Bicycle Chauffeur for the arriving guests.
The House Boy is never required to ride any bicycle naked from the Master’s property onto the public street since local law prohibits full nudity in public places. Nothing in the rule prohibits the Master from requiring the boy to maintain, repair, or ride any bicycle naked where doing so is legal or traditional, including events like the World Naked Bike Ride (See below, Rule #344), except that the boy will always be permitted the option to wear footwear and an approved bicycle helmet.
The use of bicycle locks is covered under Section B of this rule (See below, Rule 259-B).
