O; also, The Story of O
(4) An influential novel about sado-masochism written by Pauline Reage in the 1950s. It tells the story of 'O', a French woman who is taken by her lover Rene to a chateau called 'Roissy' on the edge of Paris where she is systematically subjugated and molded into a willing slave through sexual assaults, regular whippings, and long hours in solitude.
Obedience
(2) Mistresses will expect absolute, unquestioning, obedience to their commands.
(7) Like discipline, this is the ability to do what is told. It is also the ability of the boy or slave to understand and perform in a disciplined way.
(10) Obedience is the ease with which a slave's intents can be moved into alignment with their owner's (resistance is the reciprocal of obedience)

"Being obedient" does not mean that the slave has the same intent as their owner, but that when informed of the owner's intent they promptly align themselves to it. Discipline is the overall structure of rules, rewards and penalties which the owner creates to promote this obedience.

Obedience is a symptom and the primary purpose of ownership, but is not an essential feature of it: for example, a disobedient slave is still a slave if they remain subject to their master's authority when resistant to commands.
  • From: www.seekdiscipline.com
(c) In any Master/slave Dom/sub relationship, regardless of the number or gender of the parties, obedience by the sub is expected and obedience by the slave is mandatory. Along with that, consistency within an evolving dynamic is a prerequisite for the Master or Dom.
Objectification
(2) Sexual arousal from any activity in which one person is dehumanized or dehumanizes another. Animalism, and some forms of humiliation play and utility D/s, involve objectification.
(4) Sexual arousal from any activity in which one person is dehumanized or dehumanizes another.
(10) Objectification, dehumanization, and depersonalization are a set of related concepts involving the removal or denial of some of the qualities usually associated with being free, adult, and human.

For example, Slave Registration Numbers involve an element of depersonalization by providing an anonymous but unique number with which to refer to a slave without using a name.

Objectification as a fetish
Fetishistic objectification is the sexualized act of regarding a person as an object for erotic purposes. Allen Jones' sculptures ''Hat Stand'' and ''Table Sculpture'', made in 1969, which show semi-naked women in the roles of furniture, are clear examples of the depiction of the fantasy of sexual objectification. (This particular interest, a form of bondage that involves making furniture designed to incorporate a bound person, is also known as "forniphilia".)

A desire to be objectified occurs in many men's and women's masochistic sexual fantasies. Objectification for fetishistic purposes may provide erotic humiliation for the person so regarded, whether male or female. As with most sexual activities, it is generally viewed as abusive if it is not part of a consensual arrangement, such as in BDSM play.

(c) Objectification also includes using a person as furniture, as in a table or a footrest.

Odalisque; Literally, Turkish oda chamber, room + liq woman, Archaic

(w) An odalisque (Turkish: odalık / اوطه‌لق) was a chambermaid or a female attendant in a Turkish seraglio (sequestered living quarters used by wives, consorts, and concubines in an Ottoman household), particularly the court ladies in the household of the Ottoman sultan.
The English and French term odalisque (rarely odalique) derives from the Turkish 'oda', meaning "chamber"; thus an odalisque originally meant a chamber girl or attendant. In western usage, the term has come to refer specifically to the harem concubine.
(c) Historically, a chambermaid to the living quarters of the sultan's wives and concubines, though later western usage has made the term odalisque more of a sex object than a simple servant girl.

Ongoing Voluntary Submission
(10) A relationship in which a submissive continually consents to obey and serve a dominant, and their continued presence in the relationship is voluntary.

This is in contrast with relationships of Consensual Nonconsent, which are entered with the consent of the submissive, but may subsequently involve the submissive being subject to acts which they do not want (eg punishments, or restraint.) Internal Enslavement, where the slave's ability to remove themself from the relationship has been lost, is one important type of Consensual Non-consent relationship.

Ownership
(10) Ownership is the enduring authority to control and use for one's own purposes that which is owned. In D/s and M/s, ownership amounts to a transfer of authority over the submissive or slave which is veto-less and inescapable, in contrast to other types of possession which may be limited in time or scope. An owner is normally called a master (male) or mistress (female). An owned person is normally called a slave.

n O&P, Ownership represents the Master/slave half of the continuum of O&P relationships.
4 Dec 09   Ownership in O&P

Ownership Subculture
(10) The Ownership Subculture refers to the set of ideas, attitudes, events, and writings of people who are seeking or pursuing ownership relationships: that is, 24/7 D/s or Master/slave relationships, where ultimate authority over the submissive or slave is always in the hands of the owner.

Example aspects of the subculture:
  • A master and slave in a relationship
  • The rituals, habits and ideas surrounding a collar
  • "The Story of O" by Pauline Reage
  • The MASTER/slave Conference in Washington, DC
  • The theory of Internal Enslavement
Through the prevalence of Master/slave dynamics, the Ownership Subculture is strongly related to the Leather subculture (especially in North America), and has some overlap with the BDSM Play Scene and to a much lesser extent, the Fetish Scene.

O&P
(10) O&P is an abbreviation for Ownership and Possession and is intended as a overarching term for many of types of M/s (ie Ownership) and some types of D/s (ie Possession) relationship.

O&P is an attempt to create a "broad church" approach to this subject, free of some of the problems inherent in the existing terms. For example, some people pursuing relationships which could easily be described as M/s dislike the term "slave", and are unsure if M/s groups and forums are appropriate for them.

The scope of O&P is defined by the O&P Manifesto, under the headings Possession, Ownership, Consent, Responsibility, Respect, House, Service, Dignity, Authenticity, and Rituals.

O&P; Open
(10) O&P Opens were first organised in the UK in 2010 as informal meetings with a mixture of social time and roundtable discussion. These were intended to be more structured than (yet another) BDSM munch, and are in some ways similar to the regular meetings organised by Masters and slaves Together in North America.

Format
All of the Opens so far have followed the same format:
  • 1-2pm, social time
  • 2-5pm, roundtable discussion with break about 3:30-3:40pm
  • 5pm onwards, social time and/or dinner in a nearby restaurant
For the roundtable discussion:
  • People are invited to suggest discussion topics in the weeks ahead of the Open.
  • The chair makes a list of these to bring up, one by one, as each topic's discussion comes to a natural end.
  • Everyone sits round in one big circle or round all the tables pushed in to the centre of the room.
  • The chair welcomes everyone, outlines the format of the meeting, and says the four Open Guidelines have been worked out based on previous meetings.
  • The chair invites everyone, starting with themself, to say hello one by one and if they want to say the name they're going by and anyone they're here with. This lets people outline their relationships if they're comfortable doing that.
  • The chair then reads out the first topic, and sits back once people start discussing it, only intervening to steer people back to the guidelines if necessary, or to contribute to the discussion topic personally.
Open Guidelines:
  • Give everyone a turn.
  • One conversation at a time.
  • Don't repeat specifics shared in the Open.
  • State things about your relationship; but only ask about others.
