Exercise and fitness – Pull-Ups

The House Boy will maintain a daily exercise regimen which will be posted and updated as needed. Exercises and fitness goals are personalized, and one of the required exercises may be pull-ups. This exercise is done at home without clothing or footwear, though socks may be worn. The protocol calls for the boy to do half the required number of pull-ups facing in one direction, and half in the other direction. If the Master or a volunteer spotter is present, they will determine whether the sit-up has been done properly and they will count off valid pull-ups, otherwise counting is on the honor system for the boy.

Exercises are a scheduled activity and are done at the assigned time, regardless of who may be present and could observe. A record of pull-ups completed (whether goals are met or not) is to be maintained by the boy in his daily journal. The Master or a spotter may choose to either secure the boy’s ankles together if they feel the boy is trying to gain an unfair advantage by the use of his legs or feet. The boy is subject to inspection if something unusual is observed or reported during exercise, like an apparent cut, rash, or insect bite. No inspection of any body part will be carried out while the boy is doing pull-ups, though it may be announced and carried out at the completion of the final pull-up or the boy may be directed to stop exercise for an inspection, and then to resume.
