The Naked House Boy has no right to privacy and is required to shower with the bathroom door open at all times, regardless of who may be present and could observe. Protocols require the boy to soap himself while facing the entrance to the room, though he can rinse off and wash his feet while facing any direction.

When the House Boy uses public or outdoor shower facilities, he is permitted to wear appropriate footwear. This includes beach showers, facilities at resorts and pool showers away from home, and any outdoor shower whether permanent or portable. All other rules for showering and grooming must still be obeyed.

In the example photo, the House Boy is washing his hair at a shower inside the poolside changing room at a popular Palm Springs resort. He follows all of the Master’s rules to the letter, showering naked and facing the proper direction while applying body wash and shampoo (See related rules, below). He will even make sure that he doesn’t cover his parts improperly when he dries off. For this shower, however, the boy chooses to keep on his flip-flops, so he doesn’t slip on the concrete floor. The footwear also helps protect him from bacteria and foot fungus.

Appropriate footwear includes water shoes, flip flops and sandals, scuba fins, rubber shoes or boots, and any beach-appropriate footwear that the Master has issued with the understanding they will be submerged in standing water. The boy is still responsible for properly washing and rinsing his feet during every shower.
