The House Boy is expected to tend to his duties and chores as scheduled or assigned. Sleeping on the job will not be tolerated. When a boy wishes to sleep, he must ask for and receive permission in advance except during his recreation time. Resting of eyes for less than 60 seconds is not considered a violation. When a boy is observed sleeping without permission (or a guest notifies the Master of a boy sleeping), careful observation must be taken to ensure that the eye closure continues for 60 seconds continuously. Since the boy is allowed to take rest breaks, any opening of either eye before 60 seconds resets the time.

A House Boy who has both eyes continuously closed for 60 seconds or longer will be directed to a vertical position using a simultaneous verbal command and physical assistance. The phrase ‘Wake Up’ will be spoken while the boy is grasped by an extremity (such as a wrist, scalp hair, nose, or penis) and assisted to an upright and standing position. For safety reasons, the testicles should not be grabbed or squeezed.

The House Boy will be questioned to determine if a medical reason caused the violation before punishment is issued. Violations without good cause may be punished with a warning or a Level Zero non-impact assignment such as a Verbal Apology to guests, or a written assignment like writing sentences for the first violation on any given day. Repeat violations are punished as progressive discipline, beginning at Level One and stepping up to Level Three. Cumulative punishment will be imposed for any violations during the unauthorized sleep time, such as failing to answer the phone or doorbell. The Master may order a physical inspection to investigate claims of medical issues.
