The ‘Happy Face’ Command (also known as the ‘Smile’ Command) requires the Naked House Boy to immediately erase any negative or neutral expression and replace it with a substantial smile on his face. It does not matter what the boy’s actual feelings are at that moment, nor what activity he is participating in. He will 'Put On a Happy Face’ or the Master will give him a good reason to be looking and feeling sad. The protocol requires that the boy show his teeth and that the smile does not appear to be artificial or insincere.

In the example photo, the House Boy is observed with a grimace on his face while sitting on the toilet, and a guest asks why the Master allows his boy to project such a negative expression. Since the House Boy has no right to privacy, the guest is fully within his rights to observe the boy during any activity, even this one. The House Boy is subject to punishment if he is unfriendly to guests, and his embarrassment at being seen on the toilet makes him temporarily forget how his facial expression appears to others. The Master tells the boy to 'Put On a Happy Face’ to demonstrate to the guest that the Master controls the boy’s demeanor. The boy forces a smile – remembering to show his teeth to avoid punishment – and though the smile is marginal it meets the minimum to avoid having his bare bottom spanked for disrespectful insincerity.

The Smile Command does not require a House Boy to stop what he is doing, so he should continue any activity in progress when this command is given. In the example photo, the boy will continue with his bathroom activities but do so while smiling and sincerely appearing to enjoy sitting in the toilet while being observed. Smile commands automatically expire at the completion of the current activity unless a longer duration is given (such as 'Smile Until Bedtime’). The rarely given corollary command 'Do Not Smile’ – aka 'Sad Face’ – prohibits the boy from smiling, and remains in effect until canceled or until the boy’s next rest period of four hours or more.
