(4) Implying 'bland' or 'flavorless', a term used to describe non-BDSM sex or people. So for example you might hear someone saying they have a 'vanilla partner' (someone not into BDSM) or that they had 'vanilla sex' (sex not involving BDSM).
(7) Conventional, non-SM sex and or play.
(10) A term that refers to what a society considers to be standard or normal. It can be applied in various ways to refer to lifestyle, sex, behavior, or simply attitude. Different cultures, subcultures, and individuals have different ideas about what is normal and so vanilla has no direct meaning other than in relation to the alternate under discussion.

In the M/s subculture vanilla commonly means relationships where the power dynamic is predominantly egalitarian or relationships where the power relationship is non-egalitarian but based on traditional ideas of marriage consisting of separate spheres for men and women each of whom retains certain rights. This contrasts with M/s subculture where the slave is conceived as a person under the authority of his/her owner and devoid of all rights.
