The House Boy is required to work naked at home, but is permitted to wear socks or appropriate footwear at his option. When he leaves home, he is ‘loaned’ clothing or covering and must strip naked when he returns. The boy is permitted daily to choose any color and style of socks from a selection provided unless the Master decides that a particular color or style is needed for social or functional purposes. 

In the example photo, the House Boy has slept naked on top of his covers as required and soon will dress to go grocery shopping. He already has been issued a shirt and shorts for the day but is not allowed to wear them until he is leaving the property. The Master walks into the boy’s room and immediately sees an obvious violation: the boy has installed a torn sock with an obvious hole on his right foot, and he will be punished for failing to notice and report the unsuitable garnet before installing it. Violation of this nature is a minor Level One offense, and the boy will have his bare bottom swatted with the Master’s bare hand, regardless of who may be present and could observe. The number of swats will likely be few unless this is a repeat offense or the boy attempts to falsely justify his error. 

The Master issues and maintains suitable clothing for the boy to wear, and this includes a nice selection of socks and footwear. The boy is not being punished for having unsuitably holed clothing – the Master understands that socks wear out – but the boy will be disciplined for *installing* a torn sock without reporting it to the Master so that the Master may schedule the sock for replacement. Had a house guest observed the violation, the Master would hope that the guest would report the boy’s laziness for correction, and discipline would be escalated because it is disrespectful to inconvenience the visitors. 

It is not a violation for clothing to be left on the boy’s bed for short periods of time – one hour or less – as long as it is folded or hung up and put away before the boy leaves home or goes to sleep for the night. Shoes must never be left on the bed or any furniture (except a shoe cabinet), and shoe soles may only come in contact with the floor or carpet or other surface designed to be walked upon.
