Whenever the House Boy complains of illness or a guest expresses concern about the boy’s health, the Master will investigate and evaluate the boy for medical issues. If an issue is found, the Master may consider home treatment or a visit to a health professional. One of the tools necessary to evaluate the boy’s condition is sterilized thermometers, and both a rectal and oral thermometer will be kept on the premises at all times. A sign similar to the one pictured will be posted inside the boy’s bedroom or bathroom.

The House Boy’s temperature should first be taken rectally since this is a more accurate method. Obviously, if the boy has symptoms that make a rectal check unadvisable, another method may be used. Visitors must be careful not to interfere with the process, though they are not actually required to leave the room or stay out of view. Houseguests are never permitted to take a sick boy’s temperature unless they happen to also be medical professionals.

A temperature check will also be taken as part of the House Boy’s Weekly Inspection. This is a scheduled activity and will take place on the assigned day and time, regardless of who may be present and could observe. Guests who wish to learn the temperature-taking process may volunteer to assist with the Weekly Inspection. Random and ‘for cause’ temperature checks are never taken by unqualified volunteers.
