The House Boy is required to sleep naked and uncovered, though a phase-in period is allowed. Boys who are required to sleep naked and uncovered are still permitted to have and use bedding and pillows, but they must make sure that their genitals or buttocks are not substantially covered or hidden from view since House Boys have no right to privacy. Boys who allow their genitals or buttocks to become substantially covered or who attempt to obstruct or otherwise prevent viewing of these body parts are subject to punishment.

In the example photo, the House Boy is sleeping naked, but a small part of his bedsheet is covering his penis and scrotum. The Master must decide whether the boy is in violation of the rules, or whether the coverage is not serious enough to warrant discipline at this time.

In viewing the bedsheet – relative to the boy’s genitals – we can see that the sheet is covering most of the boy’s scrotum and the shaft of his penis up to the circumcision line. The top-most part of his shaft and his entire circumcised penis head is visible as it should be. In deciding whether or not to issue discipline, the Master must determine whether the parts that are covered are a ‘substantial' portion of the boy’s genitals and whether the coverage is intentional or simply accidental through tossing and turning.

In this case, the Master determines that the coverage is probably accidental, so the boy is not subject to discipline for insubordination for intentional hiding of his body. The decision on whether the accidental coverage is 'substantial’ is more difficult – because coverage is about 50% of the boy’s genitalia – but since the more important parts of the boy’s genitals are visible – the penis head and upper shaft – and that even a small part of the lesser parts is also visible (about a third of his scrotum) – the boy is barely *not* in violation of having a 'substantial’ part of his genitals hidden, so the boy will not be awakened and punished at this time. If the position of the bedsheet changes and his genitals become even slightly more covered, the boy would then be subject to discipline.

Houseguests are encouraged to report potential violations of the rules to the Master for correction. No boy has a right to privacy during his term of service, since this right was lost at collaring and is unrecoverable. Instead, the right of the Master and his visitors to see the House Boy naked at all times is a right that will be enforced as preserved. As such, any guest who observes a boy like this one – asleep with his genitals or his buttocks even partially covered – has the right to uncover or remove the offending bed sheet, even if the boy is technically not in violation of any rule.
