The Freeze Command requires the House Boy to immediately cease all motion and remain stationary in whatever position he is in, regardless of circumstances. When this command is given, he must stop all motion immediately, subject to gravitational forces and Newton’s Law of Motion. This order may be given by the Master or a guest at any time. In the event gravity or motion carries the House Boy beyond the freeze position, the commands “Rewind” and “Forward” may be used to instruct him to position to the desired position of freeze.

In the example photo, a House Boy has been instructed to Freeze just prior to jumping into the water, either for a photograph or because the water appears unsuitable for swimming. The Freeze command includes the requirement that the House Boy does not avert his eyes from where they were looking at the time the command was given, though he is permitted to speak softly. The House Boy can be required to hold the freeze command for up to 60 seconds, after which he has permission to discontinue the position unless he is being given corrective action. It is the boy’s responsibility to ensure that 60 seconds have indeed passed, or he is subject to a Level One single swat punishment on the buttocks by anyone present for violating protocol.

The Master has the right to issue a Time Out for Freeze Commands in the event they are overused or used improperly.
