The House Boy is required to spend time each week away from electronic devices and doing ‘Old Fashioned Reading Time’, also known by the acronym ‘OLD FART’ (See below, Rule #44). During the summer months when the pool is available for recreation, the boy is allowed to enjoy his free time in the pool or jacuzzi if he has been on good behavior. A House boy who wishes to use his recreational pool time to fulfill his Old Fashioned Reading Time will be permitted to do so, providing that there are no electronic devices operating in or around the pool or jacuzzi area and the boy is actually spending the time reading a pre-selected approved book or magazine. 

The boy is still obligated to follow all rules, including those that prohibit covering his genitals with the book or magazine, and he must maintain proper sunscreen and complete all necessary duties and chores. The presence of other persons in or around the pool area will not cause the boy to be penalized credit from his reading time, except that if electronic devices are turned on where the boy can listen or view for longer than five minutes then the boy may continue reading but will not receive credit for the time while reading with devices in operation. Reading time completed in the pool or jacuzzi will not need to be served in the library or study, and will be added to the boy’s earned recreation time to be used as he wishes. 

The Master reserves the right to question the boy about the contents of his reading material to determine if the boy is actually reading, and any report from visitors that the boy is gaming this privilege may result in the suspension of this rule.
