Interpretation – Communication with Strangers
The House Boy is generally prohibited from beginning communication with strangers in public areas unless permission has been granted. Quick non-verbal communication such as the flashing of a peace sign is not a violation and is not punishable, unless overused. This enables a naked or scantily clad boy a way to give strangers a friendly ‘hello’ while also communicating that he is okay. Non-verbal communication should always be accompanied by a smile. In the event that a stranger initiates conversation and asks about the boy’s clothing (or lack of it), the boy will pause and allow Master to respond.
The House Boy is never required to be naked except where it is legal or traditional. In the example pictured, the boy is walking ahead of Master on a short hike down to a nearby clothing optional private beach. If this were a public place where nudity is not permitted, the boy would be given at least one piece of clothing or covering. You can tell by his tan line that the clothing is usually small.
