Showering and Bathing – Conversation Restrictions
The Naked House Boy is required to shower or bathe with the bathroom door open and is not allowed to conceal his body parts. Lights must be turned on unless there is sufficient natural light, and the boy is responsible for following all protocols regarding washing, drying, use of towels, and cleanup.
The House Boy is also prohibited from beginning or soliciting conversation with any guest or visitor while he is showering or bathing unless the boy is spoken to first. This includes during prep duties like setting water temperature or pressure, and aftercare including drying himself off. Any attempt to begin a conversation without good reason is considered disrespectful, since a visitor may simply wish to observe the boy silently. Exceptions are permitted only in an emergency or when another rule permits conversation for a specific purpose.
When a visitor does speak first to a House Boy who is showering or bathing (including prep duties and drying off), the boy is allowed to respond to the observer politely and honestly. Since the boy is lowest in priority for use of the facilities, he is required to vacate or share accommodations anytime the Master or a guest so orders, even if this means exiting the room naked and wet with a house full of people. This also means that the guest has the right to change water temperature or pressure if the guest needs to use the water for some reason and to use towels and other bathroom supplied when needed.
In the example photo, the Master asks a female guest to look in on the House Boy as he is showering to make sure the boy is following protocol. She may or may not choose to begin a conversation with the boy, but he is subject to discipline if he attempts to do so. He is the House Boy and has only the right to speak when spoken to while bathing.
