Submissive Manifestations

Manifestations: one of the forms in which an individual is manifested...

There are several characteristics that the submissive can and may display. Generally, a majority of these traits will reveal themselves in times of acute stress, anxiety, excitement, or trauma. In my experience, the most dramatic exposure of these manifestations is in times when the submissive finds themselves in a risk situation. When a submissive is 'un-bonded,' these manifestations appear to be much closer to the surface and more easily summoned.

Posturing: Posturing is when the submissive 'naturally' assumes a submissive posture. This is without training or request by any individual. Such a posturing pose may be the natural lacing of fingers behind the back, the lowering of eyes, the crossing of fingers in the lap if the submissive is seated. When lying down, the hands seem to find themselves above the head (some submissives have difficulty growing aroused with their hands down). This type of submissive posturing is so commonplace (within the community) that it is often overlooked. However, it can be anything but commonplace. Some submissives may experience a situation where they are confronted with a serious traumatic event. As an example, I will describe a real-life situation. The submissive was walking down a street with her friend when they came upon two unknown men at the beginning of an escalation prelude to a fight. As their voices rose and their energy darkened, the submissive became riveted, plunged to her knees in the street between them, tilted her head, and waited in terror. (recounting her exact description) The men came to a halt, their desire to fight receded, and they stared at her in confusion. Her friend rushed forward to pull her up (breaking her riveted attention) and pushed her away down the street. The two men did not fight, at least not during the time when the two women remained in view. This is an example of posturing. It was not a conscious decision on the part of the submissive but an automatic response to a threat. Her apparent instinct was to present 'no threat' to the situation. By kneeling and tilting her head to expose her jugular, she was 'expressing' I am no threat. Her energy and action completely deflected the path and thoughts of the two men. Their attention went from violence to confusion. Some submissives will also bodily intervene between two Dominants on the verge of violence. The primary desire appears to be to 'reduce' the dark energy or 'blunt the edges', to 'take the heat', returning the Dominant hopefully into a controlled and/or rational state. This type of posturing appears to be much stronger when the submissive is unattached or not bonded to the will and mind of a Dominant.

There are other forms of this type of posturing; in many cases, a submissive seems to instinctively 'know' the correct positions to assume to 'please' the Dominant. Some new submissives can be told to 'present,' and they will automatically assume a posture that can be almost flawlessly perfect.

Sheening: Sheening can best be described as an exuding of chemicals through the membrane of the skin. These chemistries are oils as well as pheromones, which, when smelled by the Dominant, are designed to attract that Dominant's attention primarily in the sexual area of the Dominant's brain. This sheening often occurs in moments of intense anxiety or stress and may be accompanied by feelings of detachment, wobbliness, trembling, slurred speech, heightened hearing, and near panic. Part of this release is a 'wash of arousal' which in the female submissive may be so extensive as to have fluid running down the insides of her thighs and so intense in the male submissive as to cause a spontaneous, uncontrolled orgasm.

Riveting: Riveting is when the submissive becomes totally focused upon the Dominant. The surroundings seem to fade out or become insubstantial, eyes may dilate, hearing will sharpen, and often the submissive will note a distinct alteration in their heart rate and breathing. They can become so 'halted' that they completely lose the ability to stand or walk. They lose the ability to 'escape' from the Dominant. In some ways, this can appear like a fear or panic state, but often the submissive will not feel fear or panic as much as a total connection to the Dominant in whose sphere they are. They await command.

Command Structures: I will explore this in a more detailed fashion when examining the 'voice'. Command structures, in general, are the groupings of words issued to a submissive to command or direct them into action. A submissive often awaits command. They can describe a state of listening awareness and, upon hearing a 'correct command structure,' feel 'compelled' into instant obedience. In many ways, this is not voluntary. An unbonded submissive is vulnerable to 'hearing' any strong Dominant voice and may find themselves doing things they really do not desire to do. This can occur in the workplace, in a restaurant, or in any public place. If a submissive lives or works in an environment with a high number of dominant type personalities, they may find themselves to be everyone's 'volunteer' or unable to resist the 'desire' or 'expressed desire' of others. Command structures are not merely words (again, I will address this in detail elsewhere) but the combination of words directed by the focused 'will' of the Dominant.

Heightened Senses: When in the presence of a Dominant, the submissive will often note a heightening of their senses. Sound becomes very acute. (In scene sound often becomes critical, tiny sounds can seem as loud as cymbals) Vision alters. Many submissives will note an increased ability to 'see' in darkness. Bright light can become physically painful and very hard to tolerate. Increased sense of smell. Many submissives will experience smells in a totally new way. Sometimes things that have smelled unattractive to them before will smell enticing in a scene. They can usually clearly smell the natural odor of the Dominant near them and can sometimes 'read' that smell or interpret the scent to identify or help identify the mood that the individual Dominant may be in. A submissive will also note the ability to endure certain tastes that they cannot tolerate when not in the presence of a Dominant.

Then, of course, we come to touch. Submissives become highly sensitive to the slightest touch; many submissive females can be aroused and orgasm from something as light as a touch to their hand. They can feel that their whole body is 'waiting' to be plucked like a violin string. How they feel, or experience touch, alters and evolves depending on the circumstances, the depth of their connection to the Dominant, the strength of the Dominant's presence or energy, and other factors.

Bonding: The ability to bond or attach to a Dominant appears to be a universal submissive trait. How that bond occurs and is strengthened is far less simple than it appears from the outside. It is not a mental decision. A submissive can and will bond to a complete predator if that predator has intense, strong Dominant energy. Their quality as a human being is not a factor. This can be easily noted in the cases of very intelligent submissive men and women involved with absolute abusers. The psychiatrists and psychologists have other names for this phenomenon, but for this article, I simply call it bonding. It is not love. It is not a desire. It occurs below that level at a deeper place inside the more primal responses of the human being. Many submissives try to rationalize or justify this choice (wanting to believe it is a choice) by saying they know that this person has a good heart, they hope to change them, the abuser has sworn not to hurt them again, etc. Inside, they feel 'captured'. They cannot seem to 'evade' the 'voice' of this abusive person. Over and over, they are brought to the same place. As society is discovering, the only way to get an individual away from an abusive dominant personality is to 'remove' them from the 'presence or voice' of that person. After a period of time, the submissive 'will detach' or 'un-bond' and no longer 'hear' that abuser. However, they will continue to be susceptible to 'reattachment' until and unless they attach or 'bond' to a different Dominant. At that point, the susceptibility will diminish or vanish, though again, that depends on the strength of the two dominant personalities.

The Voice: I will examine the 'Voice' in a limited fashion here as I have an upcoming article on the subject that will cover it in detail. Many submissives note that they 'hear' a Dominant. Many Dominants have sensual, deep voices. They can speak distinctly and clearly. But, this does not truly explain this phenomenon. A submissive can feel they 'hear' a Dominant through every pore in their body. Voice is more than the ability to speak well; it is tonal inflection, sound, rhythm, meter, cadence, delivery, and focus of will. Some submissives get so 'attuned' to their Dominant that they 'hear' unspoken or non-verbalized commands. I will also note here that submissives have this same ability in many cases. Their voices will often alter when speaking to a Dominant, and it appears virtually identical in the manner of usage or the 'intent' that the submissive desires to achieve through using the 'voice'. However, this occurs only when the submissive is in what I call their neutral or top space. As they go deeper into subspace, their ability to use their voice ceases, sometimes completely.

Slurred speech: Many submissives in the presence of a Dominant will notice that their speech slurs, their ability to be witty diminishes, they may get tongue tied, embarrassed, flushed, tingly, lightheaded, or they may say things that seem very stupid and unlike them. This, in part, is due to entry into subspace, where it appears the mind's attention shifts from control to listening.

Sub-Space: Though examined elsewhere in greater detail, subspace is certainly one of the submissives' most notable and interesting manifestations. It is coupled to all of the above manifestations in one form or another, and the submissive, upon reaching that state, can experience stages of euphoria, ecstasy, and pleasure far beyond what they believe possible. With some submissives, subspace is instinctive and automatic, and they may find themselves entering it with little or no difficulty. With others, there are blocks or inhibitors. These can be overcome using standard meditation techniques, relaxation techniques, Tantra techniques, and hypnosis techniques. I sincerely recommend that both the submissive and the Dominant invest the time in exploring these areas as part of the complete exploration of the self. A submissive able to enter subspace easily is capable of going further, reaching higher peaks or flying than a submissive who cannot enter space is.

Other Manifestations: There are a variety of other characteristics that some submissives may discover. The most common and obvious one is the ability to arouse very quickly. This appears universal to both male and female submissives. The ability to respond orgasmically with a greater frequency than what may be considered normal for their age, etc. Some submissives seem to be 'built' to absorb higher levels of stimulation; this may go so far as a 'hooded clitoris' on a female or naturally high pain thresholds on both sexes.
