Sadism
(2) The act of inflicting pain.
(8) Empowerment and arousal derived from injuring others.
Sadism and masochism, also S&M, Sadomasochism
(1) This is an alternative term that is used to describe the BDSM scene. Gradually it is being replaced with the broader ranging acronym BDSM.
Sadist
(1) An individual who enjoys causing pain. The term dates back to the Marquis de Sade.
(2) A person who specifically enjoys administering pain. A Sadist is not necessarily dominant, nor is a Dominant necessarily sadistic.
(4) A person who derives pleasure, especially sexual gratification, from inflicting pain, suffering, or humiliation on others. The word comes from the name of Donatien Alphonse Francois, compte de Sade, known as the Marquis de Sade (1740 - 1814). He was the author of several sexually explicit works which explored the darker side of sexuality and for which he spent much of his life imprisoned.
(7) A person Who enjoys administering pain and or humiliation, often for sexual gratification.
Sadomasochism
(1) The taking of pleasure, often sexual gratification, from the consensual interactions between a “sadist” and a “masochist.”
(2) A term used to describe erotic activities that involve dominance, submission, or the giving and receiving of pain.
(4) Any activity or practice involving the infliction and receiving of pain.
(8) The combination of inflicting and receiving pain as a means to sexual arousal.
(10) Sadomasochism, or S&M, is a combination of two terms: sadism, meaning receiving pleasure (sexual or non-sexual) from pain inflicted upon others; and masochism, meaning receiving pleasure from receiving pain. These two characteristics regarding the interaction of pleasure and pain are regarded collectively under one term. A person may a sadist, a masochist, or both. Any of the three, in a more general term, would be called a sadomasochist.

It should be noted that, speaking generally, a masochist's pleasure derived from pain would not be derived from pain received outside of a "scene" or outside of BDSM practice, such as being injured in a car accident.

The term sadomasochism is frequently used to explain BDSM activities. These activities can range from erotic spankings to bondage to more intense forms of pain infliction or torture. Sadomasochism can also incorporate receiving pleasure from related acts such as humiliation or domination/submission (exchanging of power). Sadomasochists frequently exhibit these tendencies via relationships such as Master/slave, Mistress/boy, etc. BDSM activities are usually experienced within a "scene," which is a pre-discussed interaction between a "Top" and a "bottom." This allows BDSM practitioners to operate effectively within their standing mantra: making play safe, sane, and consensual.

Sadomasochistic Paradox
(10) The Sadomasochistic Paradox derives from the apparently contradictory nature of masochism, when masochism refers to wanting, enjoying, or liking that which you do not want, enjoy or like. Sadists who enjoy inflicting such experiences on masochists, or dominants who inflict them on masochistic submissives for some other reason, are also drawn into this by questions like "How can I hurt someone who enjoys anything that hurts?"

The resolution of the apparent paradox is that masochists like and dislike physically (or emotionally) painful experiences in different parts of their brain and psyche. For example, they may lust after an experience and beg for it while driven by their more instinctive, sexual desires, while their more conscious thoughts are silently screaming that it will hurt. As the experience approaches, the conscious mind comes to the fore but by then it is too late, and they either bail out with a safeword or in the Consensual Nonconsent (CNC) common in O&P, must endure the experience. In fact, being made to go through with intense experiences is a common reason why masochistic submissives seek out relationships involving Consensual Nonconsent.

Safe Call
(2) An arranged phone call that is set up with a safe contact when going to meet someone new or unfamiliar. Setting up a safe call is extremely important, as is meeting for the first few times in a public setting to assure safety.
(4) A practice is sometimes used as a safety measure when meeting a new partner for the first time. A safe call is a prearranged telephone call made to a trusted friend at a specific time to let that friend know that everything is okay.
Safe Contact
(2) A person who is the safety net for a person meeting someone new or unfamiliar. A safe contact must be sure to have all the information written down of where the person is in case the call does not occur so that help can be notified.
Safe, Sane, and Consensual, also SSC
(1) A popular slogan in the BDSM world meaning that play should always be safe and sane, with good judgment exercised. And, most importantly, it MUST be consensual.
(2) A term seen as the basic guidelines to SM play. Though it does state the major components of a scene it is far from describing true aspects of such but is simple enough to get the point across.
(4) A phrase commonly used to encapsulate the best principles of BDSM activity. It must be safe; you must not put people at emotional or physical risk. It must be sane; BDSM play is not the place to play out your neuroses because, in doing so, you can hurt people. It must be consensual; anything done to a person without their consent shows at best a lack of respect and more often is abusive. Good guiding principles.
(10) Safe, Sane and Consensual (SSC) is one of several phrases used by a large section of the BDSM and sexual bondage communities, who regard SSC to be a watchword for safety to describe themselves and their philosophies.

The principles are that BDSM activities should be:
  • safe: attempts should be made to identify and prevent risks to health
  • sane: activities should be undertaken in a sane and sensible cast of mind
  • consensual: all activities should involve the full informed consent of all parties involved
Other people in the BDSM community do not consider SSC to be an accurate term for these relationships/activities. The term Risk Aware Consensual Kink (RACK) has been gaining popularity as a substitute description.

Other people in the BDSM community do not consider SSC to be an accurate term for these relationships / activities. The term Risk Aware Consensual Kink (RACK) has been gaining popularity as a substitute description.

For those who dissent, issues generally arise from the subjective nature of each term in SSC and the problems this creates both within and outside the community when using the term as a yardstick to evaluate activities. Another objection to SSC is that it is redundant. For example, that genuine consent (freely given informed consent) is an equivalent principle, since without sanity one cannot be genuinely informed, and that safety is an illusion in the real world. Instead of only doing safe activities, we consent to do activities with an acceptable level of risk. In that view, information about risk is central, not safety, and so informed consent is sufficient.

Within ownership and M/s/, SSC is often rejected because of its association with "Safety Police" attitudes which are usually antithetical to ownership relationships. SSC also fails to address the issue of Consensual Nonconsent.

Most people attribute the term SSC to David Stein, based on his essay "Safe Sane Consensual: The Evolution of a Shibboleth" in which he describes the coining of the term by a GMSMA (Gay Male S/M Activists) committee of which he was a member in 1984. It is important to note that all the key concepts of SSC appeared before this. Tony DeBlase in DungeonMaster magazine popularized the term “Safe and Sane” SM and various American SM organizations including the Society of Janus, TES, and Samois elaborated on this in their own definitions of SM in the early 1980s. The term SSC did not achieve widespread notice until its use in some of the literature for the SM-leather contingent of the 1987 March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights, which GMSMA helped organize. In 1988, representatives from most of the major U.S. and Canadian SM organizations met at a conference in Dallas. Following two days of increasingly vitriolic debate, they formed an organization called Safe Sane Consensual Adults, which two years later merged with the National Leather Association (NLA). The NLA, in turn, popularized the term SSC in all its publications and its Living in Leather convention and helped it win almost universal acceptance by the early 1990s as the key concept that differentiated SM activities from abuse and criminality.

(c) Preferred term: Safer sex
Safety Police
(10) The "Safety Police" refers to the tendency of some people to express overly cautious attitudes about other people's practice of BDSM. One of the criticisms of the SSC approach is that it encourages people to police the line between supposedly "safe" and "unsafe" activities.

Sirik
(10) Sirik is a term coined by John Norman for an arrangement of chains linking a Turian collar to bracelets and anklets. In Nomads of Gor, John Norman wrote:
both girls wore the Sirik, a light chain favored for female slaves by many Gorean masters; it consists of a Turian-type collar, a loose, rounded circle of steel, to which a light, gleaming chain is attached; should the girl stand, the chain, dangling from her collar, falls to the floor; it is about ten or twelve inches longer than is required to reach from her collar to her ankles; to this chain, at the natural fall of her wrists, is attached a pair of slave bracelets; at the end of the chain there is attached another device, a set of linked ankle rings, which, when closed about her ankles, lifts a portion of the slack chain from the floor; the Sirik is an incredibly graceful thing and designed to enhance the beauty of its wearer; perhaps it should only be added that the slave bracelets and the ankle rings may be removed from the chain and used separately; this also, of course, permits the Sirik to function as a slave leash.
The sirik is similar to five banding, but with the addition of chains. The purpose is to thoroughly restrain a woman's movements, but without needing to fasten her to anything, and while still allowing her to stand, to walk with mincing steps, and to kneel in the Gorean "tower slave" or "pleasure slave" (nadu) positions.

Slave
(1) A term used interchangeably with “submissive.” Some consider a slave a more extreme version of a submissive. This will be discussed in a future article, “Slave vs. submissive.” Check back soon.
(2) A submissive that lives it to a deeper level and is usually specialized in one or more areas (valet, maid, chef, companion).
(3) A totally subordinate person who needs total direction in all aspects of their life. To be owned, to serve, without question, and who questions nothing they are told.
(4) In its traditional meaning, a person that is the legal property of another and is therefore forced to obey them. In BDSM, someone may adopt the role of a slave for the duration of a 'scene' or play session or they may enter into a long-term, structured D/s relationship in which they are owned as a 'slave' by a dominant 'master'. The word 'slave' is also used fairly interchangeably with 'submissive' by some, although the words in fact have different meanings. Every slave is submissive, but every submissive is not a slave.
(7) A person who hands over power to another, or surrenders its mental, physical, spiritual, sexual, and visual self to a Master's Will.
(8) Person who contracts to be sex slave.
(10) A person who is owned: that is, someone in a relationship with an owner who has ultimate authority over them, and from which the slave cannot remove themselves.

One of the key differences between the usage of the word "slave" in the Ownership Subculture and the BDSM Play Scene is the concept of slaves being literal slaves: this is just the everyday definition of "slave" and it doesn't include the roleplay slaves you sometimes meet elsewhere in BDSM.

For example, the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary gives: "One who is the property of, and entirely subject to another person, whether by capture, purchase or birth; a servant completely divested of freedom and personal rights."

Slave Auction
(2) An event sometimes held at play parties, conventions catering to BDSM participants, and the like, in which submissives are auctioned off for the use by the highest bidder in some context or for a set period of time. Slave auctions are sometimes held at BDSM-related events to raise money for charity.
(10) A slave auction is a social event, usually run as a fund raiser for charity and as a way to meet new people in the BDSM or Leather scene.

The general scenario is that slaves or submissives are presented on a stage by their tops or masters, and the latter would list (or have the former demonstrate) their skills and credentials, as well as what sorts of BDSM activities they have to offer. Usually a short scene of spanking, flogging, etc, would accompany the auction process.

There are many variations of this practice in terms of location, dress codes, etc. Typically, the slave auction is combined with other types of kinks that provide a context for the auction to take place. For example, if the participants of the auction enjoy public nudity, then the auction can be performed outdoors with the slaves scantily clad or even nude. Other times, the auction can be indoors, for example in an office setting, with all participants dressing like professionals. Thus, the enjoyment of the auction for a slave or submissive not only stems from the humiliation they receive from their top (by being "owned" and "sold"), but also from being able to fulfil certain sexual fantasies during the course of the auction.

Sometimes a master or mistress, by auctioning their slave, makes the auction process a "scene" (encounter) in itself.

Then people in the audience bid on their offer, usually using play money purchased with a donation to a local charity. The winner then makes arrangements for the "scene" with the person who bid their services.

No actual exchange of property takes place.

It is a popular way for people who are new to the scene to demonstrate what they have to offer, or for the newly single to advertise their availability, much like a vanilla "bachelor auction" would be.

(c) A slave is a submissive, but not all submissives are slaves.
Slave mode
(10) The system of slave modes was introduced by the BEST slave training website and is a mechanism to manage protocol in a 24/7 M/s relationship. At any given time, the slave is considered to be in a particular slave mode. Each slave mode is associated with a specific set of rules. The slave may be changed to a different mode on command. A change may also occur automatically in certain contexts, such as entering a vanilla situation. The original system described on the BEST site has 3 modes – the strict 'Slave Mode', the more relaxed 'Service Mode', and the 'At Ease' mode, primarily used for vanilla situations. However, it is possible to devise any number of protocol schemes around this type of framework.

The practical advantage of this type of approach is that it enables the adoption of sophisticated and potentially very strict high protocols in a manner that is automatically and unambiguously compatible with the mundane requirements of everyday life.

Slave Training
(10) Slave Training teaches the master's protocols, preferences and principles, and aligns the slave's perceptions with their owned status.

Slave Training can be broken down into establishing:
  • Protocols - rules of correct behaviour for a slave, including both practical issues and rituals.
  • Preferences - the personal likes and dislikes of the slave's master (and anyone else they will be serving - this is an ongoing aspect of training if new people are to be served.)
  • Principles - the master's general ethical values and practical principles, which a slave can use to deal with unanticipated situations.
  • Perceptions - including rejecting false entitlement, and feeling owned due to Internal Enslavement.
  • From: www.seekdiscipline.com
(10) Slave Training is a frequent motif in Master/slave fiction, but has been a vague concept in the BDSM scene and M/s subcultures where it can mean anything from an SM session to a process similar to Internal Enslavement. In O&P, the term training refers both to the initial instillation of the dominant's preferred attitudes and behaviours, and the ongoing process of maintaining the submissive's mindfulness and adherence to the dominant's preferences.

In fiction
Slave Training houses are frequently used settings in The Story of O, the Gor books, and Laura Antoniou's Marketplace series. These houses typically offer formal training programmes, turning formerly free and independent people into obedient slaves, skilled in the arts of service. The island resort setting of Exit to Eden also constitutes one large training environment.

All these training programmes appear to be structured rather like a military boot-camp, with periods of intense instruction and practice in various skills, mixed with indoctrination about the slave's new role and purpose in life.

In reality
The very concise "Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual" was an attempt at setting out practical advice with the flavour of the fictional slave training scenarios. However, it and the subsequent "Training With Miss Abernathy" largely focussed on elements of service (eg learning how to arrange a good sock drawer) rather than anything specific to Master/slave relationships.

More realistically, organised slave training weekends such as Master Taino's Training Academy offer orientation, practical teaching, and one-to-one counselling sessions for those starting out on this path.

Finally, theories of Master/slave relationships (such as Internal Enslavement) can be used as the basis of slave training, as can the O&P concept of ongoing training.

(4) A very strong, overwhelming desire to find a dominant partner or to become immersed in BDSM-related activities. Sometimes seen in people who identify strongly as submissive.
Subduction
(10) Subduction ("leading below") is a term borrowed from Geology and used in Enslavement to describe the process by which a slave's freedoms are stripped away. It is derived from an analogy between the slave's response to this process and earthquakes.

Strong reactions to increasing control, ie psychological reactance, are not unnatural or uncommon - in many ways, they are the symptom that things that really matter to the slave are being controlled. That does not excuse disobedience, but it can give clues that they are suitable for enslavement even when they are letting themself and their dominant down by acting up.

This whole process of increasing control is analogous to the plates in the earth's crust sliding past each other. One of the sea bed plates slides under the continental crust by "subduction". Sometimes this goes smoothly, and you don't notice it going under. But other times it sticks and there's no progress being made. The pressure builds up and up until there's a violent earthquake. It's all very disruptive and fraught at the time, but afterward, everyone sees that a big chunk of the plate has gone under in one huge movement.

Enslavement is frequently like that: sometimes blockages and then earthquakes happen, but the slave is always further on afterward.

(3) One who gives freely of themselves for the pleasures of another. A subordinate with negotiated limits.
(4) A person of either gender who submits to the will of a dominant, either for limited BDSM play or within a longer-term relationship.
(7) One who yields control by obedience to the Will of a Dominant. A strong characteristic is that of humility.
(10) A person who prefers to be subordinate in a D/s relationship, obeying, serving, and pleasing their Dominant partner. Submissive is the broadest term in the submissive/slave/property panoply. All slaves are submissives and all who describe themselves as property are submissives but not all submissives are slaves or property of an owner. Self-describing as a submissive does not necessarily mean that the person already has a dominant. Instead, submissive describes a preference for taking the submissive role in a relationship or in a bdsm scene and operates as a type of self-description or self-advertisement.

The term bottom is in turn a more general than "submissive", and also includes people who take a passive role in BDSM activities that don't include obedience or service.

The everyday definition of the word "submissive" is: "characterized by tendencies to yield to the will or authority of others" (Merriam-Webster). The bdsm and M/s definition of submissive differs from the everyday definition of submissive in the following ways:
  • Submissive in BDSM and the Ownership Subculture is commonly used as a noun and this is a correct usage within this subculture.
  • The word submissive in the BDSM world is considerably more protean than the ordinary use of the word. Submissive in the everyday sense is an adjective describing a fixed personality feature exhibited in all interactions with others. In the vanilla world "submissive" commonly refers to a set of traits that is manifested whenever the person interacts with anyone. Within BDSM or the Ownership Subculture, the word "submissive" refers only to that person's relationship to their own dominant or potential dominants they wish to form a relationship with. In other words, some very non-submissive people in the vanilla world commonly describe themselves as submissive when referring to their relationship with a dominant or when describing themselves in the BDMS or Ownership Subculture.

Differences between submissives and slaves

(10) Within much of the Ownership Subculture, submissive is used as a counter-example to the term "slave". Submissives are described as people who have rights within their D/s relationship, including the right and ability to leave if the relationship becomes difficult or unpleasant. Within a D/s relationship, submissives may have the ability to negotiate the terms of their submission on a moment-to-moment basis and have expectations of their owner on how they should be treated. These expectations are taken very seriously by both the dominant and the submissive. They may be described in a written document which both parties are expected to adhere to or they may be verbal agreements that are subject to frequent re-negotiations.

Subspace; also, Sub Space
(1) A high endorphin state that a bottom often enters into when a skilled Dominant executes a good BDSM scene.
(2) A specific state of mind that a submissive may enter, particularly after intense activities and/or (depending on the person) intense pain play, characterized by euphoria, bliss, a strong feeling of well-being, or even a state similar to intoxication. Thought to be related to the release of endorphins in the brain. The euphoria associated with subspace may last for hours or sometimes even days after the activity ceases.
(3) A mental altered state in which a person can be taken to. Space is a form of hypnotism that can be self attained, or a Dominant can aid to obtain. Subspace is used for sexual pleasure and can be utilized to convert pain to pleasure.
(3) After-care is mandatory, as is constant monitoring. Not for the novice.
(4) A blissful and euphoric state reported by some submissives during BDSM play. Also called 'bottom-space', 'flying' or an 'endorphin-high'.
(10) Subspace is a trance-like state which many submissives can enter or be placed in, either during SM play, bondage, or through receiving strong attention, especially eye-contact, from their dominant.

Submissives report an increased level of focus on their dominant, perhaps to the extent that they are only dimly aware of anything else, and may become unable to speak ("becoming non-verbal").

Subspace is distinct from the endorphin high or bottom space, which may be produced by SM; and from the "out of body" detached or dissociated state that some endurance players (and trauma victims) report.

Enslavement can be viewed as subspace applied to a whole relationship, but at a less conscious level.
